Is there a fictitious monster, locked away in some bestiary or fantasy novel, that gets larger the longer you look at it? If not, there should be one, if for no other reason than to allow me to liken this topic to it.

Last week I wrote about the importance of melodic and rhythmic dictation, which requires students to “hear what they see”. But even for people who don’t read music, pianos (and other keyboard instruments) offer another way to make a connection between sound and sight. No other instruments provide such a clear visual representation of what we hear.

I don’t know about the rest of the music teaching world, but almost all of the students that I’ve ever taught could fit neatly into one of two categories: "prefers to learn by listening" and "prefers to learn by reading".

Ah, the challenge of rhythm. We’ve had quite a few requests for new rhythm games and we hope to accommodate those requests in the near future. For now, we’ve got three games to cover some important basics.

As students progress, they have to play so many scales and chords that it seems only natural to expect them to be able to recognize those scales and chords by listening. The four games of this category take care of this important skill.
